Dating After 40: Are You Mistaking Consistency for Boring?
Dating after 40 can be interesting.
You’ve lived a little.
You’ve loved.
You’ve probably been disappointed.
You may have been married, divorced, widowed, or spent years in relationships that taught you exactly what you do—and absolutely do not—want anymore.
So you would think we’d all be experts at choosing the right person by now.
Right?
Not necessarily.
Because there is one thing that can still trip up even the most experienced dater:
We sometimes mistake healthy consistency for boring.
My Single Lovelies, we need to talk about this.
Because if you’re used to relationships filled with uncertainty, emotional highs and lows, mixed signals, or wondering when someone is going to text you back, someone who simply shows up consistently can feel almost… strange.
But strange doesn’t always mean wrong.
Sometimes strange means healthy is unfamiliar.
And that deserves our attention.
Chemistry Feels Exciting
Chemistry is wonderful.
I’m not against chemistry.
Please have chemistry!
You want to look across the table and think:
“Oh, I like this person.”
You want to laugh.
Flirt.
Feel attracted.
Have that little flutter when their name pops up on your phone.
That’s part of dating.
But chemistry and compatibility are not the same thing.
You can have incredible chemistry with someone who is terrible at communicating.
You can feel butterflies around someone who disappears for three days.
You can be intensely attracted to someone whose values, lifestyle, boundaries, or relationship goals are completely different from yours.
Chemistry tells you:
“I’m attracted to this person.”
Compatibility asks:
“Can we actually function well together?”
You want both.
Why Consistency Can Feel Less Exciting
Think about the difference.
Person A texts you nonstop for two days.
Then disappears.
Then comes back with:
“Sorry! Crazy week.”
Suddenly they are intensely interested again.
Then distant.
Then romantic.
Then unavailable.
Your nervous system is constantly waiting for the next development.
That uncertainty can create a lot of emotion.
Now consider Person B.
They say they’ll call Tuesday.
They call Tuesday.
They ask you to dinner.
They make the reservation.
After the date they say:
“I had a great time. I’d like to see you again.”
And then they actually make the next plan.
No guessing.
No decoding.
No group chat investigation.
No wondering whether a heart emoji means they want a relationship.
And sometimes people look at that and think:
“Where’s the spark?”
My question is:
Was the spark actually chemistry—or was some of it uncertainty?
Consistency Is a Relationship Green Flag
Consistency does not mean someone has to text you every morning at exactly 7:14.
It doesn’t mean constant communication.
And it certainly doesn’t mean perfection.
Consistency means their behavior generally makes sense.
Their words and actions align.
If they say they want to see you, they make an effort to see you.
If they say they’ll call, they usually call.
If plans change, they communicate.
If they are interested, you don’t have to solve a mystery to figure it out.
That is TASTY.
Watch What Happens at the Table
This is where Food Talks comes in.
You can learn a lot about consistency during a meal.
Does your date tell you kindness is important?
Wonderful.
How do they treat the server?
Do they say they’re easygoing?
Great.
What happens when the restaurant loses the reservation?
Do they tell you they’re a good communicator?
Okay.
Are they actually listening when you speak?
Someone’s beliefs about themselves are interesting.
Their behavior gives you more information.
Food Always Talks.
TASTY Consistency Looks Like…
They follow through.
They communicate when plans change.
They make room for you in their life.
They show interest without making you chase them.
They treat you respectfully whether they’re trying to impress you or not.
They remain kind when something goes wrong.
Their words and actions generally tell the same story.
And perhaps most importantly:
You usually know where you stand.
That doesn’t sound boring to me.
That sounds peaceful.
NOT TASTY Looks Like…
One day:
“I can’t stop thinking about you.”
Three days later?
Silence.
Then suddenly:
“Miss you.”
But still no plan.
They talk about taking a trip together but can’t commit to dinner Thursday.
They say they want a serious relationship but their behavior is completely casual.
They tell you communication is important but disappear whenever a difficult conversation comes up.
My Single Lovelies, those are not puzzles you need to solve.
Those are patterns you need to observe.
Don’t Confuse Anxiety With Attraction
This can be a difficult lesson.
Sometimes we experience anxiety around someone and interpret it as excitement.
We’re constantly thinking about them.
Why?
Maybe because we genuinely like them.
Or maybe because we have no idea what they’re going to do next.
There’s a difference between:
“I’m excited to hear from this person.”
and
“I desperately need to hear from this person so I know whether they still like me.”
One feels like anticipation.
The other feels like uncertainty.
Dating after 40 is a wonderful opportunity to learn that distinction.
Peace Is Not Boring
A healthy person may not leave you wondering where you stand.
They may not create dramatic highs and lows.
They may simply be interested.
And tell you.
They may make a plan.
And keep it.
They may communicate.
They may show up.
My Single Lovelies, do not underestimate how attractive that can become once you stop associating emotional chaos with chemistry.
Peace is not boring.
Consistency is not boring.
Respect is not boring.
Emotional availability is definitely not boring.
Those are the things that give chemistry somewhere safe to grow.
The Food Talks Test
The next time you’re dating someone, stop asking only:
“Do I have butterflies?”
Also ask:
Do their actions match their words?
Do I feel comfortable?
Do I feel respected?
Do I know where I stand?
Do they follow through?
Can we communicate when things don’t go perfectly?
Do I feel more secure as I get to know them—or increasingly confused?
Every date is data.
Pay attention.
The Takeaway
Dating after 40 does not mean giving up excitement.
Quite the opposite.
You can have chemistry, attraction, laughter, flirting, great food, and all the wonderful things that make dating fun.
But you can also expect consistency.
And when you meet someone whose behavior is steady, respectful, clear, and intentional, don’t dismiss them simply because you aren’t riding an emotional roller coaster.
Sometimes the person who gives you peace instead of confusion is exactly the person worth getting to know.
Patterns over promises.
And, of course…
Food Always Talks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is consistency important in dating?
Yes. Consistency can demonstrate reliability, genuine interest, communication, and emotional availability. One imperfect moment isn’t a problem; repeated patterns are what matter.
Can a healthy relationship still have chemistry?
Absolutely. Healthy does not mean boring. You can have attraction, excitement, flirting, and chemistry while also having communication, respect, and consistency.
Why does a consistent person sometimes feel boring?
If you’re accustomed to unpredictable relationships, emotional stability may initially feel unfamiliar. That doesn’t necessarily mean you lack chemistry.
What are relationship green flags when dating after 40?
Consistency, communication, emotional availability, respect, healthy boundaries, curiosity, kindness, and actions that match words are strong green flags.
What’s the difference between chemistry and compatibility?
Chemistry is attraction and emotional spark. Compatibility involves how well your values, communication, lifestyle, goals, and behaviors work together.
